Dr. Charles A. Parker February 27, 1931 - April 11, 2002 COLUMBUS, GA- Dr. Charles A. Parker, 71, of Columbus, Ga., died Thursday, April 11, 2002 at his home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 14, at 4 p.m. at Striffler- Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road Chapel, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, with Rev. Jerry Cooper, a nephew from Worth County, officiating. Entombment will be at Parkhill Cemetery in the Chapel of the Pines Mausoleum. Visitation will be Saturday, April 13, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Wendell Hobby, Robb Myers, Kenneth Owens, Frank Parker, Mark Smith and Richard Tillison. Dr. Parker was born in Opelika, Ala., February 27, 1931, the son of Kathryn Tomblin Parker of Columbus and the late Curtis A. Parker. He was a graduate of Baker High School and earned degrees from Georgia Southwestern College, Georgia Souther University, Auburn University and Columbia University in New York, where he received a doctorate in education. He was a professor at Georgia College from 1964-69 and was principal of the lab school. Also, Dr. Parker served as principal of schools in DeKalb County, Milledgeville and Columbus. He served 14 years as a professor an Dean of the College of Education at Columbus State University, retiring in 1983. Dr. Parker was past president of the Georgia Principal's Association and a member of the Retired Professors of Columbus State University. From 1984 to 1995, Dr. Parker managed Georgia Legal Services. An outstanding and tireless servant in volunteer organizations, Dr. Parker received the WTVM-TV Volunteer Award, the WRBL-TV Give Your Best Award, the CONTACT Community Volunteer of the Year Award, numerous other awards for his service and numerous certificates of appreciation by city agencies for volunteer work. Beginning in 1994, he served as chairman of the Columbus Metropolitan Task Force for the Homeless, volunteering 40 hours a week for eight years. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Dr. Parker was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church of Columbus. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Sara Parker, Columbus; son, Charles Allen Parker, Jr. and his wife, the former Nancy Farrell, New York, N.Y.; daughter, Cathy Parker Tuggle, and her husband, Raymond, Columbus; two brothers, Frank Parker, Acworth and Clinton Parker, Orlando, Fla.; sister, Emily P. Myers, Macon; five grandchildren, Brandon and Kyle Tuggle, Columbus, and Robert, William, and Kathryn Parker, New York, N.Y. Memorial donations may be made to the Columbus Metropolitan Task Force for the Homeless at 1000 9th Street, Columbus, Ga., 31901.
