Gerald Sanders, Class of '56

After Baker, I attended Embry Riddle School of Aviation in Miami for the summer of 1956, but returned to Georgia that fall and attended West Georgia College for one year. I joined the Air Force in the summer of 1957, went to Lackland for basic training and then to the Presidio of Monterey (Califonia) where I studied the Russian Language for 6 months. From there, I was sent to the National Security Agency at Ft Meade MD for additional training and then was assigned to the 6901st Spec Comm Group in Zweibrucken, Germany where I served my remaining three years of duty. Following military service, I kicked around for a while in Columbus, then Detroit for a summer(staying with an Air Force buddy), returned to Columbus and then set out for South America by car but only got as far as New Orleans where I stayed for several months working at odd jobs, playing bowling machines, and living a kind of low-rent Bohemian life. I went to Atlanta and worked as a car wash guy for Airways Rent-A-Car for a few months and then was hired as manager for EconoCar where I worked for a few years. While in Atlanta, I married Barbara in 1963, went to night school and graduated (with honors) from Georgia State in 1969. I then went to the Univeristy of Georgia for a Masters (1972) and the Ph.D (1974)in Geography. I secured a teachng position back at West Georgia College in 1974 and taught there until 1999 when I retired. Barbara and I divorced in 1977. I married Ann in 1978, and we have been happily married now for over 27 years. I now reside at a place called Fairfield Plantation located between Villa Rica and Carrollton, GA. We have a nice house on a large lake, a hobby green house, too much yard, lots of flowers, a picked-up cat, and a lovable Havanese dog named Cookie. Ann plays golf, bridge, works in the house and yard, and takes care of several grandkids from time to time. For the past year, I've spent most of my time overseeing the golf course operation on the premises and haven't had the time to do what I like to do: piddle around in my greenhouse and yard, build birdhouses, and take nature photos. I hope to return to that kind of retirement soon. May 30, 2005

While at UGA, my good friend, Jim Ingram, and I went to a golf tournament at Hilton Head. He took this photo unbeknownst to me. Note PBR below.
