Played football, wrestled, band member, general pain in the neck to most teachers.
Most memorable moment was pinning the heavyweight wrestler from Central High School in 29 seconds of the first period.
After 23 years in sales and sales management, went back to school and got my Masters in Education and taught English and Journalism at Huffman High School in Birmingham. After three years of teaching in Birmingham I moved to St. Joseph, La. (three miles past the end of the earth) where I am in my fifth year of teaching at Newellton High School in Newellton, Louisiana. I was named teacher of the year at Huffman in 1997, Newellton in 2001, again in 2002 and Technology Teacher of the Year in 2004. I was also the Parish teacher of the Year for 2001-2002. At Newellton I teach English 11 and English 12,Internet Research, ACT prep, US History, and World History.
I married in 1981, divorced in May, 1997. I have a 16 and 19 year old sons. The oldest one is beginning his sophomore year at LSU in Baton Rouge, while the youngest still lives with his she-wolf in Birmingham. I am blissfully single.
Randy Achey
July 24, 1952-April 3, 2006
ST. JOSEPH, LA — Services for Randy Achey, 53, of St. Joseph, who died Monday, April 3, 2006, at his residence, will be at 2 p.m. today at Newellton High School.
Mr. Achey was born on July 24, 1952, in Ft. Belvoir, VA, the son of Kenneth Paul Achey and Elizabeth Wetherill Achey. He was a teacher at Newellton High School for the past six years. He was a graduate of Baker High School in Columbus, GA and received his Bachelors of Science in Journalism from the University of Georgia and his Masters in Secondary Education from the University of Montevallo, AL.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by two sons, Will Achey of Baton Rouge, LA and Tom Achey of Helena, AL; two brothers, Paul Achey of Duluth, GA and Wayne Achey of Americus, GA; one sister, Anne Ballengee of Herndon, VA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart or the American Diabetes Association.
