More than one Baker Lion started out at St. Marys Road Elementary School, and several members of the Class of '65 were in Miss Drew's sixth grade in 1958 and 1959. How many of us can you pick out? Select the thumbnail for a full view. [70K]
We have guesses! Are they right? Can you add to them? Seated, third from left might be Rick Dorer. Standing left is Miss Drew. One of us remembers that she had a master's degree and a red and white '58 Chevy. Does anyone remember her first name? Standing first row left is Bob Brown, third from left is Connie Hudson, and fifth from left might be Gerry Ibach. Does anyone know for sure? Eighth from left is Beverly Britton. On the second row left is Donny Adams. Fifth from left is Nita Curry. On the back row, John Altenburg is on the left. Marsha Wood is on the back row... somewhere.
Bill Logan, who signs himself "Ann McBride's Secretary," has written to tell us that the first row, second from left, is Betty McBride (Steed) and fourth from left is Kathy Bass.
April 23, 2005. Jim Dykes, who also went to St. Mary's and Baker, has written with more information. Jim writes, "Miss Drew's name was Barbara J. Drew but she went by "Geri" Drew. She went to Brown Avenue as principal and was principal of Blanchard Elementary School before she retired. She lives in Brewer, Maine. There was an article about her in the Ledger-Enquirer a few weeks back.In the picture far left seated is Butch Shinholster and second from right seated is John Hart. John's brother was Jasper and sat in front of me in seventh grade that year. Jasper, David Pilgrim, Bobby Dye, and I all were friends and had a great time in the neighborhood. I mowed Nita Curry's mom's lawn. John Altenburg's mother was my Cub Scout den leader. He had a younger sister named Zoe Ann. There are other faces there that are very familiar and I am going to wrack my brain to see if I can come up with any names to go with them. St. Marys Road will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary in 2007. That means that we are getting old. Do you remember the janitor? His name was Willy Walker. Mr. Parker's secretary was Kay Heberling. Her husband George was at Benning with my Dad."

The Class of '65 reports to school as freshmen. We were proud to be high school students, and a little scared of the big change in our lives.1964
The Class of '65 start their senior year in September. Student Council officers were Roger Cadenhead, President, Mike Nielond, Vice President, David Wells, Secretary, Dudley Wells, Treasurer, and Brenda Hollis, Historian.Baker used the "platoon" system to accommodate the large number of students, about 2,800. First classes started at 7:45; the "second shift" started at 8:45.
